Stakenet (XSN) - A DEX with interchain capabilities (BTC-ETH), Huge Potential [Full Writeup]

Preface
Full disclosure here; I am heavily invested in this. I have picked up some real gems from here and was only in the position to buy so much of this because of you guys so I thought it was time to give back. I only invest in Utility Coins. These are coins that actually DO something, and provide new/build upon the crypto infrastructure to work towards the end goal that Bitcoin itself set out to achieve(financial independence from the fiat banking system). This way, I avoid 99% of the scams in crypto that are functionless vapourware, and if you only invest in things that have strong fundamentals in the long term you are much more likely to make money.
Introduction
Stakenet is a Lightning Network-ready open-source platform for decentralized applications with its native cryptocurrency – XSN. It is powered by a Proof of Stake blockchain with trustless cold staking and Masternodes. Its use case is to provide a highly secure cross-chain infrastructure for these decentralized applications, where individuals can easily operate with any blockchain simply by using Stakenet and its native currency XSN.
Ok... but what does it actually do and solve?
The moonshot here is the DEX (Decentralised Exchange) that they are building. This is a lightning-network DEX with interchain capabilities. That means you could trade BTC directly for ETH; securely, instantly, cheaply and privately.
Right now, most crypto is traded to and from Centralised Exchanges like Binance. To buy and sell on these exchanges, you have to send your crypto wallets on that exchange. That means the exchanges have your private keys, and they have control over your funds. When you use a centralised exchange, you are no longer in control of your assets, and depend on the trustworthiness of middlemen. We have in the past of course seen infamous exit scams by centralised exchanges like Mt. Gox.
The alternative? Decentralised Exchanges. DEX's have no central authority and most importantly, your private keys(your crypto) never leavesYOUR possession and are never in anyone else's possession. So you can trade peer-to-peer without any of the drawbacks of Centralised Exchanges.
The problem is that this technology has not been perfected yet, and the DEX's that we have available to us now are not providing cheap, private, quick trading on a decentralised medium because of their technological inadequacies. Take Uniswap for example. This DEX accounts for over 60% of all DEX volume and facilitates trading of ERC-20 tokens, over the Ethereum blockchain. The problem? Because of the huge amount of transaction that are occurring over the Ethereum network, this has lead to congestion(too many transaction for the network to handle at one time) so the fees have increased dramatically. Another big problem? It's only for Ethereum. You cant for example, Buy LINK with BTC. You must use ETH.
The solution? Layer 2 protocols. These are layers built ON TOP of existing blockchains, that are designed to solve the transaction and scaling difficulties that crypto as a whole is facing today(and ultimately stopping mass adoption) The developers at Stakenet have seen the big picture, and have decided to implement the lightning network(a layer 2 protocol) into its DEX from the ground up. This will facilitate the functionalities of a DEX without any of the drawbacks of the CEX's and the DEX's we have today.
Heres someone much more qualified than me, Andreas Antonopoulos, to explain this
https://streamable.com/kzpimj
'Once we have efficient, well designed DEX's on layer 2, there wont even be any DEX's on layer 1'
Progress
The Stakenet team were the first to envision this grand solution and have been working on it since its conception in June 2019. They have been making steady progress ever since and right now, the DEX is in an open beta stage where rigorous testing is constant by themselves and the public. For a project of this scale, stress testing is paramount. If the product were to launch with any bugs/errors that would result in the loss of a users funds, this would obviously be very damaging to Stakenet's reputation. So I believe that the developers conservative approach is wise.
As of now the only pairs tradeable on the DEX are XSN/BTC and LTC/BTC. The DEX has only just launched as a public beta and is not in its full public release stage yet. As development moves forward more lightning network and atomic swap compatible coins will be added to the DEX, and of course, the team are hard at work on Raiden Integration - this will allow ETH and tokens on the Ethereum blockchain to be traded on the DEX between separate blockchains(instantly, cheaply, privately) This is where Stakenet enters top 50 territory on CMC if successful and is the true value here. Raiden Integration is well underway is being tested in a closed public group on Linux.
The full public DEX with Raiden Integration is expected to release by the end of the year. Given the state of development so far and the rate of progress, this seems realistic.
Tokenomics
2.6 Metrics overview (from whitepaper)
XSN is slightly inflationary, much like ETH as this is necessary for the economy to be adopted and work in the long term. There is however a deflationary mechanism in place - all trading fees on the DEX get converted to XSN and 10% of these fees are burned. This puts constant buying pressure on XSN and acts as a deflationary mechanism. XSN has inherent value because it makes up the infrastructure that the DEX will run off and as such Masternode operators and Stakers will see the fee's from the DEX.
Conclusion
We can clearly see that a layer 2 DEX is the future of crypto currency trading. It will facilitate secure, cheap, instant and private trading across all coins with lightning capabilities, thus solving the scaling and transaction issues that are holding back crypto today. I dont need to tell you the implications of this, and what it means for crypto as a whole. If Stakenet can launch a layer 2 DEX with Raiden Integration, It will become the primary DEX in terms of volume.
Stakenet DEX will most likely be the first layer 2 DEX(first mover advantage) and its blockchain is the infrastructure that will host this DEX and subsequently receive it's trading fee's. It is not difficult to envision a time in the next year when Stakenet DEX is functional and hosting hundreds of millions of dollars worth of trading every single day.
At $30 million market cap, I cant see any other potential investment right now with this much potential upside.
This post has merely served as in introduction and a heads up for this project, there is MUCH more to cover like vortex liquidity, masternodes, TOR integration... for now, here is some additional reading. Resources
TLDR; No. Do you want to make money? I'd start with learning how to read.

MtGox and the 140,000 BCH still there.

I think that there are still around 140,000 BCH with the MtGox trustee. After the last sale an option was given to bitcoin holders to receive their BTC and BCH rather than have the trustee dump them and give fiat. Because this arrangement was set up before the BSV split there was no option for bitcoin holders to receive BSV. So the trustee will dump them and give fiat.
So which whichever fork does not get the BCH ticker, come November, will be dumped by the trustee.
Same thing will happen with any BCH Grayscale recently bought I assume.
Thoughts?

BitFinex cannot name or list Bitcoin Cash properly. Companies as poorly run as BitFinex and Mt Gox should not be trusted by the Bitcoin community.

After listing Bitcoin Cash under the pejorative, BitFinex has moved the Bitcoin Cash ticker below the 10 or so other currencies on the trading list, despite many of these altcoins' volumes being much lower (OMG, IOTA, SAN).
If you are a non-citizen in the US for school or work (like myself), the BFX margin trading is nice to have, but beyond that I recommend other exchanges.
Because this political nonsense is ridiculous from the exchange that is basically the new Mt Gox in terms of volume. Then again, this is also the company that:
1) Launched a spiteful phony lawsuit against Wells Fargo for preferring to do business with more reputable firms, and then withdrew it 3 days later.
2) Did not secure its own clients' Bitcoin.
3) Stole its clients' Bitcoin, crypto, and USD to bail itself out from its insecurity.
4) Did not repay its customers' the increased value of the crypto.
5) Allows suspected market manipulation and an unaudited, fractional-reserve like Tether operation. See https://medium.com/@bitfinexed for more details on that.
6) Stole a portion of its clients' Bitcoin Cash after it failed to understand the incentives of hedging Bitcoin before the fork.
7) Instead of focusing on fixing these issues, they focus on redesigning their UI to attack Bitcoin Cash.
It's a company led by immature, incompetent thieves. Trade your crypto elsewhere if you can.

Coinbase Binance Dance. Guide to Purchasing Altcoins.

Coinbase Binance Dance. Guide to purchasing altcoins.

The Coinbase Binance dance is a multi-step process used to purchase altcoins. (An altcoin is any cryptocurrency that is not Bitcoin). Reddit in particular is very fond of this method as it is commonly recommended to newcomers.
How it works: You purchase Ethereum using Coinbase, send that Ethereum to your Binance account, then execute a trade selling said Ethereum for your cryptocurrency of choice.
This is a process that seems very tedious and a bit complicated to crypto-newbies. No need to worry, I’m going to walk you through the process with photos included for visual aid.
Using this method, you can purchase various types of cryptocurrencies including:
Etc… the list goes on. So long as it’s listed on Binance, you will be able to trade for the coin.

Accounts to sign up for

Both Coinbase and Binance are cryptocurrency exchanges you must sign up for in order to do this method.
I recommend you create these accounts sooner rather than later as it can take a few days to get fully verified (especially for Coinbase).
If you’re having issues, or questions, or would just like more information, I have full detailed tutorials regarding both Coinbase & Binance.
See below:

I have created these accounts. What do I do now?

Awesome! You’ve got the accounts created, now it’s time to do the dance. For the sake of this tutorial I’ll be purchasing the cryptocurrency XRP. Remember, this method works with any cryptocurrency so long as it’s listed on Binance.
  • Step 1: Make sure your token can be purchased with Ethereum. Go to Binance's home page and select ETH Markets use the search bar to look for your tokens ticker. See photo.
If your token does not appear, check BTC Markets. If you see it there, you'll need to buy BTC and send it to Binance instead of ETH.
  • Step 2: Purchase Ethereum using Coinbase. See photo.
For the lowest possible fee in Coinbase, link your bank account the downside is that it will take 5-7 business days for your funds to be available to send from your account. To have instant access to your funds, pay with a credit/debit card. The downside to this being that fees will be higher.
  • Step 3: Send your Ethereum from Coinbase to your Binance Ethereum wallet address. See photo.
Optional: Depending on your location, you may or may not have to pay a Coinbase transfer fee. If you see that you do and would rather not, you can mitigate this fee by sending your crypto to Coinbase Pro or GDAX then to Binance. If this otherwise does not concern you, please continue below.
To find your Binance Ethereum wallet address, go to: Funds > Deposits > ETH - Ethereum and click Copy Address. See photo.
Once you click confirm, you’ll be asked to complete 2-step verification provided by your phone. See photo.
You can view the transaction in Coinbase. After a few minutes you’ll see confirmations coming through. Refresh the Binance deposits page as well and you’ll see confirmations. See photo.
You’ll get two emails during this process. One from Coinbase, another from Binance. Cryptocurrency transactions are not instantaneous on the Ethereum blockchain. In this case it took ~6 minutes for this transfer to complete, however this may vary depending on how congested the network is. During high periods of high traffic on the Ethereum blockchain, you can expect it to take longer than 6 minutes so don’t worry if it’s taking longer. As long as you’re seeing confirmation, you should be good. See photo.
Once you receive the Deposit Success Alerts email from Binance, go to Funds > Balances in Binance. You’ll see that you’re Ethereum balance has increased. See photo.
  • Step 4: In Binance, go to Exchange > Basic. You’ll be met with a screen that looks like this. See photo.
I know this screen looks a bit confusing. It’s really not. First thing we need to do is make sure Ethereum (ETH) is set as our baseline currency for trade.
  • Step 5: Set Ethereum as baseline currency. See photo.
You can see in that photo what is shown is all the possible cryptocurrencies pairings available with Ethereum.
  • Step 6: Use the search bar to search for the token’s ticker you’d like to purchase. See photo.
In the case for Ripple, the ticker is XRP. If you don’t know your coins ticker, Google it.
  • Step 7: Set your prefered parameters and click Buy. See photo.
The 25% 50% 75% and 100% buttons refer to how much of your set baseline funds you would like to dedicate towards your purchase. In my case, by clicking 100% I am saying I’d like to use 100% of my Ethereum funds to purchase XRP. Clicking 75% would be 75% of my ETH funds etc…
The Amount and Totals sections are automatically filled out based off your % choice.
  • Step 8: Wait for your order to be filled!
Depending on the market, your order may be filled right away or not. If you’re getting impatient you can always cancel the order and try again at a slightly higher price. If you’re going to edit the price per coin section, just be sure you don’t accidentally end up paying a ridiculously high amount.
If you click into the price field a blurb will appear showing you how much you’re paying per coin. See photo.
Congratulations! You’ve just done the Coinbase Binanace dance. Wasn’t so hard was it? Once your order has been completely filled, the Funds > Balances page should reflect your purchase. See photo.

Lower Fees using BNB

It helps to purchase a little bit of Binance native token BNB to help save on fees. Make sure you enable it in your account settings! See photo.
You can purchase BNB using the same method described above.

Selling your crypto.

Selling your crypto is a very similar process. In my instance with my XRP, if I wanted to sell that back to USD. I’d need to sell the XRP for Ethereum, then sell that Ethereum for USD on Coinbase.
The process would look something like this:
  • Sell my XRP for Ethereum in Binance
  • Withdrawal the Ethereum from Binance to Coinbase
  • Sell the Ethereum for USD through Coinbase.

Recommendations

If you consider yourself a hodler, and do not plan to actively be making trades, I highly recommend you send your crypto to a hardware wallet such as the Ledger Nano S. Hardware wallets are a form of cold storage and are the safest way to store cryptocurrency.
It is highly recommended you DO NOT store crypto on any exchange as exchanges themselves are prone to hacks (see Mt. Gox hack).
I also highly recommend you secure your Binance and Coinbase accounts with 2-factor authentication (2FA) and google authenticator to reduce the risk of a hack.

Conclusions

In the end, be glad that you learned how to do this process! Figuring out how to actually purchase cryptocurrency is one of the most challenging things for newbies, and now that you have a Coinbase and Binance account setup, you have the ability to purchase 95% of coins.
If you have any questions feel free to comment down below or send me a message. I’d be happy to help!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not use Bitcoin to send to Binance. Why use Ethereum?
  • Transactions on the Ethereum blockchain are faster than Bitcoin's. Ethereum has a block time of ~15s, Bitcoin has a block time of ~10min. This means on average, Ethereum transactions will be faster than Bitcoins. Fees are also lower on the Ethereum blockchain so I consider Ethereum to be a much better bridge currency in the use of purchasing altcoins.
You could also use Litecoin if you wanted to. Litecoin has a smaller block time (2m 34s) compared to Bitcoin and the fees are much lower.
To see block time data on blockchains, BitInfoCharts is a very good resource.

Portfolio Advice

I was one of the unfortunates caught-up in the Mt. Gox mess and I just recently got back into Crypto. I've decided on a sum to invest and so far allocated it as follows: 25% BCH, 25% LTC Monero Dash, 10% Various Alts.
I've left the last 40% of portfolio for BTC/ETH and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to divide my investment between the two... my gut says the fork will be messy no matter what happens and that like in the past ETH stands the most to benefit so I should put 3/4 of the funds towards ETH pre-fork then the remaining 1/4 towards BTC post-fork once things calm down... Thoughts?
I'm a big blocker and really hate to put any funds towards BTC at the moment, but I also realize the name "Bitcoin" along with the ticker symbol "BTC" is worth a lot.

Full Review

At a Glance

Sentinel Protocol can be described as security intelligence platform for blockchain (SIPB), this includes a wide variety of security features, from anti-theft, malformed transaction prevention, unknown threat prevention, transaction traceability etc. The protocol collects hacking reports, which are then delegated to "The Sentinels", a group of trusted security experts, who confirms the incident and registers the case information to the Threat Reputation Databse (TRDB). The Sentinels are rewarded for participation under the Delegated Proof of Stake (DPOS) model with Sentinel Points (SP), which can later be redeemed for its native currency UPP. Sentinel Protocol also introduces their own S-wallet, a secure wallet with built in machine learning AI, Fraud Detection System (FDS) and built-in security features such as filtering scam addresses and detecting abnormal behavior, leveraging TRDB for always up-to-date threat definitions. Sentinel Protocol utilizes the strength of decentralized and distributed computing, running extensive tests and simulations in their D-Sandbox (Distributed Malware Sandboxing) environment, effectively cutting cost down compared to the traditional expensive dedicated virtual machine environments. Sentinel Protocol can be integrated seamlessly to any client wallets and exchanges, leveraging its collective intelligence to protect users from malicious threats.

Key Security Features

Threat Reputation Database (TRDB)
Those who have used anti-virus softwares for the internet should be familiar with definition files, each commercial virus scanners maintain their own virus/threat database and end-users need to update on a periodic basis for the latest definition. These databases are not only centralized making them more vulnerable to manipulate but more importantly never complete as vendors lack any incentive to collaborate. Sentinel Protocol aims to create a global alliance for threat information exchange, with built-in incentives for each vendor to contribute to the TRDB.
Machine Learning Engine Integrated Security Wallet (S-Wallet)
Sentinel Protocol's secure wallet (S-wallet) is similar to an "antivirus enabled wallet", leveraging collective intelligence harvested by the community and security experts pooled in the TRDB. S-wallets can detect suspicious executions, these can be in the form of blacklisted wallet addresses, scam sites or fradulent activities detected by their Fraud Detection System(FDS), driven by their proprietary machine learning engine. S-wallet also analyzes the threat tendency and history to proactively respond to unknown threats (known as zero-day attacks) that traditional antivirus softwares can't do before the next software update. This is an AI driven engine, continuously learning from the client side Sentinel Wallet to create model behaviors.
Let's create a use case to see how this might work in real life. Say you're about to participate in an ICO, and ICOs these days come with scams by default. There's a telegram DM popped up on your phone, with a contribution address that will expire in 3 min, it's been a busy day that you're not keeping up with the latest update and you are about to FOMO in.
Now when you enter the contribution address into your S-wallet, ready to send the transaction, the send button suddenly turns red with (13 SCAMS REPORTED), you know S-wallet just saved your hard earned(?) ETH.
Distributed Malware Analysis Sandbox (D-Sandbox)
D-Sandbox is similar to traditional sandbox, a test environment (virtual machines) to run unverified programs. In D-Sandbox environment (decentralized nodes), potential threats are submitted and analyzed thoroughly via collective intelligence, at significantly lower costs of computing resources and infinitely scalable.

Real Hacks, Real Solutions

The Sentinel Protocol team has written a wonderful article examining the recent NEM hack, or more precisely Coincheck exchange hack, a massive 523 million NEM coins compromised. The article can be found here So what is the solution to NEM hack and its kind?
'Security' is a big topic, let's examine a few high profile hacks to understand what Sentinel Protocol is capable of and what it isn't.
The Mt.Gox Hack
In 2011, some hacker breached into Mt. Gox auditor's computer and used it to transfer a huge amount of bitcoins to themselves, which were later sold on Mt. Gox itself. This created a huge strain on the market that caused a major crash.
If Fraud Detection System (FDS) was installed to monitor and detect abnormal behavior, it would've been initiated to notify the exchange to take immediate actions to mitigate the hack, eg. halting trades from this specific address to prevent further damages to the order book.
In 2014, Mt.Gox was robbed a whopping $473 million from transaction malleability attack. This protocol level vulnerability isn't something Sentinel Protocols can help prevent, it is more of a system level design security while Sentinels Protocol is an added layer of security.
There are other examples, like the DAO hack caused by recursive requests called on a poorly designed function, or multi-sig vulnerability hack in both Bitfinex and Parity. These type of 'security' issues can't be fixed or prevented by Sentinel Protocol, but during adnormal events, Sentinel Protocol can at the very least alert the affected parties.

Team

The Sentinel Protocol team is stacked with cyber security talents, a connection was apparently made through the company Darktrace that several team members including the foundeCEO worked for. Darktrace is an AI company for cyber security with 620 employees in 32 offices, specializing in machine learning algorithms to detect and respond to cyber-threats across diverse digital environments. We can also see traces of other industry leading cyber security firms including Palo Alto Networks, F5 Networks and Penta Security Systems. The team has complete relevant work history, experiences, as well as established industry connections for the Sentinel Protocol project.
The name Uppsala is named after an old capital of Sweden, where the founder Patrick Kim and co-founder HM Park stayed and conducted some study over blockchain focusing on lightning consensus algorithm, the idea of Sentinel Protocol was also drafted there.

The Polo Effect on BTC Price

I believe this is my second Reddit post. I am 99.9% in read-only mode via ZeroBlock, which usually results in an antacid with my lunch. For something to happen in the Bitcoin space that causes me to sit down and initiate conversation, then I believe the community is missing something big. This is my story and the effect on the crypto space.
A few months back, BTC price took a nose dive hitting a low around $900. This was a mass exodus of asset holdings from Bitcoin to alts according to the dive in Bitcoin’s percentage of total market cap: https://coinmarketcap.com/charts. Some call it “the flippening” and the cause for the drastic shift into alts is the same reason btc exists.
Well-seasoned with trading markets (formerly Series 7 licensed) I decided to give the largest trading exchange a try: Poloniex. I fully understand the risk of holding coins on an exchange, but ultimately decided that part of this risk is offset by diversification into smaller alts. I setup 2FA and transferred most of my coins.
Up until Sunday there were no issues. The combination of new money coming into this space along with a greater flow of BTC being used as an entry point into alts was a no lose situation. The gains the last month were ridiculous. I mostly dabbled in top 20 market cap alts, but even DOGE has rocket boosters on.
Sunday night my brother and I are both dinking around in Polo and experience lag. It was not my local connection as the trollbox users were experiencing the same lag. Polo’s servers were on the edge and no one knew it yet.
My brother leaves and I go long on an alt and within 20 minutes, Poloniex’s front end will no longer execute trades. The trollbox still worked and there was severe lag, but trading was not stopped. Whales with access to auto trading bots via API decided to execute sells from all alts into BTC safety. The site took approximately 45 minutes to rectify, with all alts blood red. I sold my margin long alt at a 3 BTC loss and had no idea what just happened. This was around 1/20th of my altfolio and the gains from the previous month covered that with no worries. As an IT guy who has installed servers in datacenters, I laid awake most of the night staring at the ceiling trying to put the technical pieces together.
Going long on Polo means that you are not just betting that your alt will rise, but it has to rise greater than BTC as the pricing is per BTC. For example, LTC right now is .0179 BTC. As it turns out, Polo front end server outages are a worst case scenario for margin longs and this was the first of many.
The lag continued into Monday so I decide to place limit orders on three different alts 15-20% below market price in case of another outage. All three of my orders hit on the next outage and the price flies back up in correction. I sell two of the three positions at a profit and decide to hold 600 LTC for a day or two. Then the worst possible thing happened. The Polo servers crashed two additional times in quick succession and a fourth time this morning around 10 AM EST before total price correction. At one point, my altfolio was down almost 40%. LTC was at .0203 on Sunday before the first Polo crash. My position was at .017 and by the time the worst crash hit it was at a low of .0131. BTC was flying up but my altfolio was wrecked. I survived with strong hands and was not over-leveraged, selling this afternoon a little over break-even. Most alts recovered to about 90% of pre-first Polo outage prices. ETH lost 1 billion in market cap at the worst point and all this alt money flowed into BTC, thus the price influx since Sunday.
Thousands of other users experienced the equivalent of Mt. Gox 2.0. Total loss. One guy on the trollbox said he felt like jumping out a window. Another guy setup PoloniexLawsuit.com which now re-directs to Polo. I doubt the guy would forward his URL to Polo unless they reimbursed him in whole. I have no doubts there will be a class action regardless. The NYSE shuts down tickers all the time and have circuit breakers built in. In my opinion, Polo is not liable because of the server issues (and lack of DDOS protection), but because they did not pull the plug allowing unacceptable losses.
I have to give credit to Polo for one thing, the API was shut down on the fifth server lockup this morning, no orders from API bots. I know this because the candles flat lined at a certain point for about 45 minutes. At this point, I noticed that Kraken and GDAX prices held within 1% of Polo’s outage price on all coins. Polo would not admit they effective shut down all trading when the front end went down, but I am sure of it.
Bad things happen when technology does not scale. Good luck Bitcoin, I’ll be back when you are ready.

Poloniex hits $1225, past 'all time high' of $1216 Nov 2013

"The current all-time high was set on 17 November 2013 at US$1,216.73 on the Mt. Gox exchange."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_bitcoin
(edit: $1242 Nov 24, 2013 is the MtGox all time high)
I just saw the poloniex ticker hit $1225. Its been a long time coming. My hope for bitcoin in 2017 is that the development process and the miners and other stakeholders come together to get past the current stalemate and on to more transactions per second and more features!
ps. "all time high" is in quotes because the peak mtgox price was when the 'market' was mostly phantom-coins in a mysql db. Bitcoin likely reached a legitimate all time high around $900

Why is MtGox still the default?

Everybody who's not a complete noob seems to agree that MtGox are a dishonest bunch of thieves. Then why do so many apps and tickers still have MtGox as the default? Does MtGox pay them a lot of money?
I've sent bitcoinity.com and email to ask them to change the default but got no response.

Bitcoin 1.0 vs 2.0 – or – A Comparison of Legacy Exchanges & Veritaseum's UltraCoin

Veritaseum is looking for liquidity providers to assist in kickstarting the world's first global P2P exchange. If you have a healthy stash of BTC, please contact us to discuss.
I was looking at the offerings of a large US bitcoin exchange just now, after hearing that Coinbase had the highest volume of any US-based broker just weeks after opening an exchange (we’ll discuss that at a different time, since Coinbase is waiving fees meaning those users are hot money, but likely are part of the largest installed bitcoin user base in the world and growing rapidly). What I found was illuminating, at least for me since I don’t follow the offerings of BTC brokers and exchanges that closely. I noticed several of the industry (BTC exchange) leaders offer leverage, plain vanilla swaps and TRS (total return swaps - basically fixed/variable rates in major fiat denominations for cryptocurrency (BTC. LTC, DRK) exposure). I said to myself, “Wow, that’s pretty advanced.” Then I looked at the fees, and saw the swaps were priced up to and past 15%. Then, upon further research, I realized that these swaps were financing mechanisms for margin lending. The first thing that came to mind was the difference, and limitations that come with the business models of first generation bitcoin companies and second generation Bitcoin companies. Take notice in the difference of the capitalization. Lower case "b" denotes the accounts of value that the mainstream media calls digital currency. Upper case "B" denotes the blockchain-based, protocol driven services and capabilities behind the lower case "b". Generation 1.0 v. generation 2.0!
To put this into perspective, Veritaseum's UltraCoin offers user programmable swaps (ie. you can make your own CDS, TRS or plain vanilla, or even a custom swap) with exposures to not just 3 cryptos and 3 or 4 fiat currencies, but all major and most exotic currency pairs (dozens) as well as over 45,000 tickers covering EVERY major asset class (stocks, bonds, forex & commodities as well as cryptos) from exchanges throughout the world. This is all capable at a sliding scale of 10 to 25 basis points, round trip. That's the equivalent of 5 bp to 12.5 bp per trade. In addition, all of this is done without UltraCoin having any possession of your funds, whatsoever. Veritaseum (the company behind UltraCoin) is a software concern, not a financial entity, thus you have no exposure to our balance sheet. We cannot MT. Gox you and you essentially have no counterparty, default or credit risk because your counterparty is the blockchain, and you trade peer to peer vs. through a centralized exchange. Pretty big difference from the legacy systems that we're all used to, no?

The Difference between Bitcoin 1.0 and Bitcoin 2.0 Companies

To begin with, I'd like to make clear that not only is the title misleading, but all references to the same are essentially inaccurate. Bitcoin itself is still in beta stage (0.9x) thus its not accurate to refer to 1st and 2nd generations of bitcoin businesses. If anything, we're all in beta. Now that I've gotten that off of my chest... The first bold generation of bitcoin entrepreneurs (it's amazing that you can refer to companies born 2 and 3 years ago as a previous generation, it just goes to show you how fast this space is moving!) built businesses based upon bitcoin as a legacy commodity. Basically, they bought, sold, transmitted or transferred it as a unit of value. They did this because that's how everything was done for the last several thousand years in the financial services industry. Basically, they had no choice - or so they thought. Then came those who read the Satoshi whitepaper and the bitcoin wiki and saw a very different meaning. My team and I are among those entrepreneurs. We saw that bitcoins were malleable, programmable, tools with which one can use to paint upon the canvas of value. A far cry from the moving of static financial widgets from place to place. Think of moving bitcoins around (bitcoin 1.0 companies) vs programming bitcoins to act on their own according to their contractual owner's wishes (bitcoin 2.0 companies) akin to pushing a model T Ford around town vs. programming your driverless electric Tesla to go by the grocery store to pick up some fresh produce before swinging by the school to pick up your kids on the way home to meet you to take your wife (girlfriend?) out to dinner.

Trading Through a Balance Sheet-Based Financial Institution vs. Distributed, Decentralized, P2P Software Concern

What I do want to accomplish is the education through the fact that the Bitcoin protocol has given rise to the genesis of a new type of company, with a new business model that can offer a totally new type of product. As you were able to see from above, Veritaseum's UltraCoin offers a very uniquer product with many if not all of the attributes that potential competitors offer, with a slew of attributes that others can't touch. This is done at 1/150th of the price and at much less risk! When dealing with Veritaseum's UltraCoin, you can never get Gox'd because we never have (nor do we want) possession of your coins or fiat - every, at any time. Because we don't user our balance sheet (we are a software company, not a centralized exchange or brokedealer) you:
This is just the beginning of what is capable with bitcoin (and this is pure bitcoin, not altcoins, no tokens, no sidechains, just pure, old fashioned [at least as old as it can be considered] bitcoin) and 2.0 business models. Wait until you see the new stuff we'll be rolling out.

It's a matter of risk. This is not a dig at Bitfinex. AMA Request: Coinlab

I have some major questions about the Mt. Gox to Coinlab transition process which can be divided into three main areas.
1.) Technology transition 2.) Business transition 3.) Legal transition
Technology transition: Are you guys writing your own code, website, etc. to perform bitcoin exchanges between people? Or are you using Mt. Gox's code? Or is Mt. Gox still hosting the technology side with only the logo change? If you are using Mt. Gox's code I feel like your programmers won't be intimate with all of the code. Remember when Bitcoinica transferred to Intersango? They gave a Ruby website to non-Ruby developers which led to unprecedented chaos. CHAOS. If Mt. Gox is hosting all of the technology side then I imagine there will be problems since the team is split into two different hemispheres. If you are writing your code from scratch it will be untested. What language are you using? Can you describe some of your coding practices? Database? Are you using the Amazon cloud? The cloud is known for going down (Coinbase uses the Amazon cloud and it goes down from time to time. Who knows how Coinbase runs the qt client in the cloud or if they run multiple instances of the qt client to get it to scale.)
Business transition: Mt. Gox has a team of at least four people, and I know they hired some more to handle the volume. What kind of team do you have in place? Will your site still be able to handle Dwolla, bank transfer, etc. types of transactions? Mt. Gox was hacked because the original founder leaked his access to hackers. Will you give access to Mark? How is the GPU processing going or are you pivoting to this new business model? How many businesses can you run at once with the funding that you have? "Wall Street" was mentioned to handle high-net worth individuals. What kind of progress have been made here? Are we talking about a Nasdaq ticker or a fund of some sort?
Legal transition: For verified users, Mt. Gox has all of our documents. How will this be handled? Will you report all trades to the IRS? Or, will you consider Bitcoin a commodity? How do you deal traded coins vs mined coins in terms of taxes? If the gov't has a warrant for info on an individual how will you deal with this? It seems like you would have no choice but to comply with the gov't or risk going to jail. What if the president makes bitcoins illegal (as was done with gold in the 1930s).
Sorry if there are so many questions...because there are. :P

The Truth.

The Truth is...
Bitcoin will not fail, or collapse, or in other way crash to worthless 1s and 0s because of Mt. Gox. If it implodes, it will be for other reasons, ones which have a much greater effect on the currency as a whole.
The reasons of how or why a BitCoin bust could happen, in brief, would be more along the lines of Governments intervention; particularly in geographic areas where BitCoin could see large growth adoption. That could be a killer. Tax levys by governments; especially in countries where large amounts of BitCoin owners hold their wallets.
In other words... intervention would have to occur. Mt. Gox failing; another exchange toppling; these are market events that yes do swing the price; but the price was highly volitile to begin with. Can anyone honestly expect a surge from just a few dollars to $1200 without a MAJOR correction? Just look at any stock that has seen a soaring rise - and look 2 or 3 or 5 years past that event. Correction. Apple is a perfect example.
People sell on bad news. When there are more sellers than buyers, prices go down. People are sheep in a heard. They follow. They startle easilly. Right now. It's bad news. Fear. Where there is fear, many are reluctant to buy.
People buy on good news. People are greedy. People are impatient. We all want it now. A few months ago it was good news. There were more buyers than sellers. Prices were going up. People were holding their coins. Talking heads and articles plugged the amazing ride of BitCoin dreams. Suddenly lots of people were trying to buy... people who 1 day prior to hearing about BitCoin didn't even know what a crypto currency was.
Trading bitcoins is stock trading for morons. Throwing darts at a board. I quote Gecco. "I don't throw darts on a board, I bet on sure things". So unless you have a crystal ball or a time machine, and know what is going to happen in a day, a week or a month, you better have a strong stomach because it's going to be a hell of a ride.
Bitcoin is highly volitile. It going to continue to be. It is going to again be at $400. It will also see $800. If you have your eyes set on buying at $475, or $510, or what ever number lower than it is currently trading at- be willing to ride it out, and down, to much lower numbers before ever seeing a gain. And that could take time, during which- it could in fact, although unlikely- collapse.
In order for Bitcoin to simply be "Sustainable", and "Widespread", it needs to stabilize, which will happen, but not for some time.
Secondly, it needs to reach a much higher price point per BTC, which mind you, I believe will happen, but this could take time. A lot of it.
People will NEVER trust a currency that trades like BTC. The trading that is going on between alt coins and BTC is the root cause of this problem. No sane person would load BTC into their wallet with actual fiat; knowing the fact that by the time they go to the mall, or meerly jump online to spend some BTC; the price has gone down 10%.
These wild swings are what is going on. 450; 465; 510; 535; 585; 577; 562; 514.... If you watch the ticker, this is what is happening on an onging basis - with each number above representing 15 minutes.
This crazy behavior will only slow down once "trading" on such a "micro stock" level stops; which requires higher BTC value.
Higher BTC value will mean slower moves.
Slower moves; stability; will create a sense of trust; and will inspire adoption of the protocol.
I believe in BitCoin. I believe in Litecoin. I think there is room for likely only two. Perhaps a 3rd small one. Coke. Pepsi. RC. McDonalds. TacoBell. BurgerKing.
Litecoin, in my eyes, seems to be the contender for the VP position.
Want to make a money in this racket? Mine. Don't trade. Mine.
Create coins from thin air.
It is possible that in 10 years; those coins could be worth a fortune. But save yourself the pain and misery. You are not going to get rich quick. So turn off the news. Tune it out of your head. Mine. Hold long term. Reinvest only to mine more.
In closing. Everybody just needs to relax. Mt. Gox went belly up. GOOD. They were known for being totally shady. They were in Japan. They were run by a doofus. What Lite and Bit coin is in need of is a "TDAmeritrade" or "Fidelity" type of exchange that is super low rate/commission. It needs legitimacy.
I feel for those who lost money in the Gox scandal. But honestly the writing was on the walls months and months ago. Customer service was terrible. Withdrawls took weeks. No smart person would store and send money to a company like that. Wake up people.
So my plan... Im running about 25MHash in Litecoin. Getting about 7 LTC a day.
I am just gonna let my machine run and run and run and collect the 1s and 0s. But I have, and you should too.... have a 10 year outlook.

Hi r/Bitcoin! I made a simple Android app I think you might like :)

So for a while now I've been trying to find a basic Android app to display the real-time price (in large text) of bitcoin in several different currencies. I've got a spare android phone and wanted to use it as a dedicated ticker. My searching didn't turn up anything so I ended up writing it myself. I call it Bitpulse and it taps into the MtGox streaming API. Every currency that the API supports is supported in the app. Oh and it's free too!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ericbarch.bitpulse
Would love your feedback and your thoughts...hope you like it!

A WordPress Bitcoin Ticker Widget

After trying to find a normal WordPress widget on the web that displays the latest Bitcoin prices with a graphical representation I finally gave up and decided to write one myself. So I'm proud to present to you the Bitcoin widget that will let you display the latest Bitcoin prices from 3 major exchanges: MtGox, BitStamp and BTCe. It will also give you a graph representation of the last 24 hours of Bitcoin prices. Any improvements or ideas for how to make it better are appreciated.
