A wave of Spam and tears (Part 3)

If you lost Part 1 and/or Part 2 I suggest reading them first to get the whole story.
There we go. Nr. 1 and Nr. 2 done. So whats going on with the last ticket.
Lets analyze the quote before i begin the story.
"My Computer is acting weird after I paid a bill."
The sentence has prominent information about what happened. Her computer is acting weird. OK that's not special. But it is acting weird after she payed a bill? Lets see... Who is this person... Not good. She is working in the purchasing department. OK screw the prominent information. Better get up there. They are working with money.
So i got to the office in no time and searched Godzilla... Yep Godzilla might be fine. Not offensive... But suitable.
I found her on a printer printing something suspiciously familiar.
Me: Hello. I'm ere for the ticket you send us earlier.
Go: Ah hi. One moment please. I just need to scan some documents.
Looking over her shoulder i saw what i hoped not to see.
Keywords: "phone contract", "pay 30€", "more information in pdf included"
Me: Where have you found that? (worried sound)
Go: It's a bill I payed. You know we are responsible for the phone contracts right? I need to store a copy. I'll be there for you in a minute.
Me: No. Please show me exactly where you got this Bill from and what you have done to pay it! (more worried)
She was rather confused but at least she put aside the papers and went to her computer.
Go: I'll get you the bill. But I'm not allowed to show you any protected information. There you go.
SH**! I got one of those E-Mails last month. It's a kid of good disguised E-Mail that wants you to pay around 30€ for a phone contract. Included is a fairly big amount information about one of our field service managers. The E-Mail also included a link which seems to lead to our partner bank. But if you take a closer look you see that the Hyperlink behind it is different. That's the first thing i checked. The "example.pdf.exe" went into the background for me at that moment.
I checked where the hyperlink leaded me and yes it's a Phishing site that looks exactly like the site of the bank... And Chrome even told her so. I guess i could stop the story now... But it wouldn't be a complete tale if i don't finish it. So now more worried than i ever was before i started talking to her.
Me: Please answer that question in detail. What information have you used to pay on this site.
Go: "Bank account number". But i'm not allowed to give you more information.
Actually she wasn't even allowed to tell me that exact account number either, but i knew exactly what this account is used for. Basically it's the account they use for all payments in connection with field stuff. And phone contracts are just a very small part they pay with this account. New cars and conventions are payed with that one too.
Me: OK. Just to be 100% sure. You payed the bill after clicking on that link in the E-Mail you showed me. And you typed in all the information needed to send money to a specific bank account.
Go: That's the procedure.
FU"$!!"$= "($!"%$ §%!/"&
I completely ignored her and ran down the stairs to get to the purchase departments supervisor who was currently sitting in a meeting with BigBoss and many other important people. While running i called my supervisor, told him what happened and what i was planning to do. I got his approval and ran to the meeting rooms.
As i opened the door to the meeting room all eyes were on that one heavily breathing guy standing in the door frame. Ignoring their confused looks i went to the purchasing department supervisor who was holding a presentation i just interrupted. I whispered a short summery to him and made clear that this is top priority at the moment.
He was speechless for some seconds. His eyes looking at the meeting room, at me, at the meeting room and again at me.
PDS: Are you sure with that?
Me: Yes
PDS: fu!"%§&... (mumbling)
He ended his presentation and followed me to his office. While we were on the way i explained him what happened and that someone might have all needed numbers to just pump out one of our bank accounts.
He immediately called massive amounts of people. I have no idea who he was calling but i would guess that he was making sure nobody can get money out of the used account.
While he was working on the bank stuff i got back to the PC. She said something about acting weird.
Side note here: We are using Thin Clients connected a server which runs the VM of the actual windows machine.
Lets see. First thing i noticed is the speed. Not the system itself. Everything is opening just fine, but the keyboard input takes about half a second to appear on the screen. Odd. Checking the Task manager i found 4 processes I've never seen before. One of them is using 99% system power.
Aw hell no i know what this is! I played with one of these in a VM before. (Every time i get a Virus mail i download and install it on a VM to see what it does). And this little thing is absolutely genius! Process Nr. 1 is some kind of software to build a tunnel to whatever server. Nr. 2 is a key logger (What could explain the input lag), Nr. 3...yeah...No idea what it does but i bet nothing good. And the best one: Nr.4! A basic Bitcoin miner running in the background at low priority. I had a good laugh about that one 1 year ago when i first discovered a similar virus. I still think it's genius. The virus didn't harmed anything actually. The tunnel connection was blocked by our firewall so it never collected any data that could get out of the company.
I'm not even trying to clean that mess up. Generating a new VM is just the click of a button and another click to install all the software.
My pulse is now getting slower. I think we took care of everything. The rest of it is not in my hands. Before i left the office PDS thanked me for my fast deciding what to do and asked me to lock Godzillas account down until he sorted things out.
That's it. I'm done with the day. I'll take half the day off today. I don't like that kind of stress... And holy moly i was close to crap my pants when i was entering the meeting room. But hey :) I have a car full with beer. All in all the day was a success.
So some days passed now and my supervisor told me that nothing bad happened due to my fast acting and everything ended out fine.
Godzilla is still working here but i have no idea if there were any consequences.
Sorry for the delay on part 3. Had some other stuff to do after writing part 2.
I hope you had some fun with this tale :)

Bitcoin mining basic tutorial

since i was helping keef get his bitcoin mining OP started i though id post something so that if any of you are interested, you can join us.
bitcoins are basically an anonymous online currency (there are physical forms but thats irrelevant and difficult to explain) im going to quote the wiki article to explain a few things cause im too lazy. "Unlike most currencies, bitcoin does not rely on a central issuer, like a central bank or government. Instead, bitcoin uses a transaction log across a peer-to-peer computer network to record transactions, verify them and prevent double spending. The verification process awards effective bitcoin nodes or "bitcoin miners" with a limited release of bitcoins and transaction fees (if any). This process requires intense computing power, electricity and significant investment as it solves SHA256 hashes through bruteforce to verify transactions and add them to the network's transaction log. Currently, bitcoin is the most widely used alternative currency:[12][2] As of February 2013, the monetary base of bitcoin is valued at over 275 million US dollars."
so basically bitcoin miners will always be needed. because of the calculations that come from the transfer and exchange of bitcoins. in essence a bitcoin is a large string of data stored on your harddrive. so if your hard drive fries... so does your coins... but the problem is that you cant just make new bitcoins... there is a maximum number that could ever be in existence... so your hard drive crashing hypothetically increases the value of all remaining bitcoins. albeit just slightly.
now as a miner, you have a few different options.... theres pooled mining. and solo mining... solo mining can be quite lucrative if you have the processing power to do so. but for miners with only one computer doing the mining, pooled mining is where its at. (shit gotta get ready for work. ill finish this when im home)

"So, Antonop thinks a 51% attack is an issue.... CH 10 of the Mangling Bitcoin thing. Basically, just like all the other fools - he ignores economics. A miner with 100s of millions invested does not steal a coffee!"
